The identities of his parents remain undisclosed. As per his legal action against the Office of the Inspector General of the State Department in 2000, his father emerged from the harrowing experiences of the Holocaust, escaping Romania and seeking refuge in the United States. Stuart Seldowitz’s mother, also a Romanian immigrant, encountered his father in New York, marking the beginning of their shared journey.

In 2009, Seldowitz assumed the position of director for European Affairs at the National Security Council, advising President Barack Obama on matters related to the Balkans, Turkey, Cyprus, and the Caucasus. Notably, he played a significant role in implementing the Dayton Peace Accords, which concluded the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995.

In 2013, he transitioned to the role of senior adviser for the Dayton Peace Accords Project and joined Gotham Government Relations, a Washington, DC-based lobbying firm, as its foreign affairs chair.

However, on November 19, 2023, a video surfaced on Instagram showing Seldowitz berating a halal cart vendor in Midtown Manhattan with Islamophobic slurs and derogatory comments. The incident, lasting about 10 minutes, sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability, as Seldowitz’s abusive behavior garnered outrage from various groups and individuals. The incident led to demands for legal consequences for Seldowitz, who had previously held esteemed positions in government and diplomacy.
