Chita Rivera’s parents were Katherine (Anderson), a government clerk, and Pedro Julio Figueroa del Rivero, who played clarinet and saxophone for the United States Navy Band.

Her father was Puerto Rican, and her mother had Scottish and Italian ancestry. Chita was one of five children in the family. After Chita’s father passed away, her mother became a widow and started working at The Pentagon when Chita was only seven years old.
