Dan Maurer suffered for 7 years before going for surgery.
Dan Maurer was diagnosed with scrotal lymphedema, an extremely unusual illness that left him in constant pain and struggling to walk, shower, or even use the toilet. He had a 14-hour surgery to remove the giant mass and can now resume relations with his wife after seven years of abstinence.
Doctors were initially unable to determine what was causing Dan Maurer’s condition, and it wasn’t until he saw a TLC show called The Man with the 132lb Scrotum, which featured a man named Wesley Warren, then he finally started getting answers.
Dan Maurer then contacted Warren’s physician, Dr. Joel Gelman of UC Irvine Medical Center, who subsequently made him a formal diagnosis of scrotal lymphedema. The diagnosis meant Dan Maurer could finally be treated for the disease, and in 2014 he underwent a grueling 14-hour operation involving a team of eight surgeons and 12 support staff.
After many hours lying on his back after the surgery, he developed aching pain above his coccyx. Worse still, he was unable to walk after the surgery, forcing him to spend 10 weeks in California (at a cost of $500,000) in rehabilitation but reportedly fine now.
