An important body in Nigeria that aids students in getting into colleges and universities is the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. Established in 1978, its primary function was to coordinate an examination known as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Students who wish to attend universities in Nigeria or other higher education establishments should take this test.

Exams for admission to polytechnics, colleges of education, and monotechnics are also coordinated by JAMB. Students must have earned their West Africa Senior School Certificate or an equivalent National Examination Council credential in order to sit for these exams. The registrar is the individual in control of JAMB. Prof. Ishaq Oloyede is the current registrar; he began serving in this capacity in August 2016.

Because it facilitates students’ equitable admission to universities and colleges, JAMB is significant. JAMB guarantees that every student has an equal opportunity to enter higher education by arranging a standardized test.

JAMB establishes a registration deadline each year for students wishing to take the UTME. In 2023, for instance, registration opened on January 14 and closed on February 14. Students can register online or at approved registration sites during this period.
