Riley has been in episodes of the television series Poirot (2003, 2006), Marple (2006, 2008), and Doctor Who (2008, “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead”).

In the brief-lived E4 sitcom Nearly Famous (2007), she portrayed Lila, a writer who was in love. The television show Westworld’s first two seasons featured her as Angela.

In 2005, Riley made her theatrical debut at the Old Vic in The Philadelphia Story. Critic Rachel Read praised her “delightful” performance in Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke revival from the year 2006.

Riley appeared as Marianne in 2009’s The Boat That Rocked, Mary Bennet in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and St Trinian’s and St Trinian’s: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold, both of which she also starred in.

In the 2010 film Inception, Riley played a disguise worn by Tom Hardy’s character. The first of the five original short films in Love and Distrust, which was released direct-to-video in 2010 and featured Riley and Robert Pattinson as co-leads in The Summer House, was The Summer House.

The Summer House, a solo download, debuted at the top of the global iTunes charts on its first day and remained there for several days. She was in White Frog as well.

Between 2009 and 2015, Riley turned her father’s idea and story into a screenplay. She later directed Scottish Mussel (after being unable to find a director for the movie) and starred in it.

Acts of Love, her first book, was released by Hodder & Stoughton in August 2016. Riley’s second book, The Quickening, was published by Hodder & Soughton in June 2022.

She was the subject of Esquire’s March 2010 cover story. She received the “Brit to Watch” designation from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2011.
