Malkin was born in Magnitogorsk, Russia, on July 31, 1986, to Vladimir and Natalia Malkin. Vladimir participated in the Metallurg Magnitogorsk youth and club hockey system in addition to working for Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, the biggest iron and steel works in Russia and the main industry in the city. Malkin has a brother named Denis, who is a year older than him.

Malkin was three when he started skating. Two years later, he signed up for his first organized hockey league.
