Lucan first met Veronica Duncan in 1963; they later got married. She was born in 1937, and Major Charles Moorhouse Duncan and his wife Thelma were her parents. The family had moved to South Africa after Veronica’s father passed away in a car accident when she was a young girl.
The family relocated back to England after her mother remarried, and her new stepfather accepted a position as the hotel’s general manager in Guildford. She and her sister, Christina, both went to St. Swithun’s School in Winchester.
Veronica continued her academic pursuits at a Bournemouth art college after showcasing her artistic talent. Later, Veronica and the two sisters shared a flat in London where she worked as a model before transitioning to a secretary position.
On October 14, 1963, The Times and The Daily Telegraph published an article about their engagement. On November 20, 1963, they were married at Holy Trinity Church in Brompton.
The couple honeymooned in Europe while traveling first class on the Orient Express after getting married in front of Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone (one of whose ladies-in-waiting had been a relative of Lady Lucan).
Lucan’s father gave him a marriage settlement that was meant to help him pay for a bigger family home and any future additions to the Lucan family, which was a welcome boost for his already precarious financial situation.
After paying off some of his debts, Lucan bought 46 Lower Belgrave Street in Belgravia and redecorated it to Veronica’s liking.
