He is of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. Arenado attended El Toro High School as a teenager and played shortstop for the school’s baseball team. In his senior year, he batted 517 and had five home runs. After graduation, Arenado wanted to attend Arizona State University on a baseball scholarship.
Arenado struck for the cycle against the San Francisco Giants in June of 2017. He made his first playoff appearance, playing in the Rockies’ NL Wild Card Game loss to the Diamondbacks. Arenado went on to win his fifth straight Gold Glove and third consecutive Silver Slugger Awards, as well as his first Platinum Glove Award.
In 2018, he received the Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, and Platinum Glove Awards. Arenado won another Gold Glove and Platinum Glove Award in 2019, followed by his eighth consecutive Gold Glove during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired Arenado in early 2021. He blasted his first home run with the organization in March, in a defeat to the Cincinnati Reds. In the Cardinals’ home opener in early April, he homered in a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Arenado ended the season with a.255 batting average, 34 home runs, and 105 RBI. He went on to win his ninth straight Gold Glove Award. Instead of becoming a free agent as his contract allowed, Arenado elected to stay with the Cardinals at the end of the season.
