Ellen Degeneres Parents: Meet Elliott & Elizabeth Jane

A fresh look at Ellen Degeneres Parents: Meet Elliott & Elizabeth Jane, bringing you valuable insights.

DeGeneres was born to Elizabeth Zane who was a speech therapist and Elliott Everett DeGeneres who was an insurance agent.

In 1973, her parents separated; they got divorced the following year. Soon after, her mother married salesman Roy Gruessendorf. While her brother Vance stayed with his father, Betty Jane and DeGeneres relocated to Atlanta, Texas, with Gruessendorf.

DeGeneres was sexually assaulted by her stepfather when she was 15 or 16 years old. Grussendorf pretended he wanted to check her breasts for lumps because her mother had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer in order to touch her improperly.

She eventually fled from home and spent the night in a hospital after he attempted to break down her door and sexually abuse her. A few years later, DeGeneres told her mother about the violence, but Betty Jane didn’t believe her and continued to be married to Gruessendorf for another 18 years.

When DeGeneres‘ explanations of how he behaved toward his stepdaughter kept shifting, she finally came to the conclusion that he had been speaking the truth. In 1997, Gruessendorf perished.
