After four consecutive victories in 1980, he lost his first fight to Ken Norton, who won by split decision.

Cobb lost again in 1981, this time to Michael Dokes. He then rebounded to defeat Harry Terrell, Bernardo Mercado, and Jeff Shelburg. Cobb went on to win all nine of his subsequent contests before abruptly retiring in 1993.
