Musk relocated to New York City and enrolled in the French Culinary Institute. With his then-wife, Jen Lewin, and Hugo Matheson, he launched the community cafe The Kitchen in Boulder, Colorado, in 2004. The Kitchen has been named one of “America’s Top Restaurants” by “Gourmet,” “Food & Wine,” “Zagat’s,” and the James Beard Foundation. The restaurant has locations in Chicago and Denver as well.

From 2006 to 2011, Kimbal was the CEO of the advertising network OneRiot, which was acquired by Walmart-Labs. In 2011, he founded Next Door American Eatery, a fast casual restaurant in downtown Boulder. Next Door American Eatery had ten locations as of 2019.

Musk spent seven years helping the Growe Foundation, which planted gardens in Boulder schools, before launching The Kitchen Community (later renamed Big Green). “We’ve spent the last 12 years helping people grow their own food — with garden-based education, scalable, modular garden products and systems, and a community of support and collaboration,” according to the Big Green website. We’ve established a nationwide network of over 700 lively and tasty Learning Gardens.
