Burke co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records in 1995 alongside musician Jay-Z and entrepreneur Damon Dash. Damon approached Burke to be an angel investor in the record label. Burke contributed $16,000 in startup capital. Damon then used all of that money to film a music video for Jay-Z’s song “In My Lifetime.” Burke reportedly linked Damon and Jay to an associate he knew on the Caribbean Island of St. Thomas who leased the trio a yacht and allowed them to film the video at his estate.

The organization was originally founded to act as an independent outlet for Jay-Z’s debut album after the rapper was repeatedly turned down by major record labels. Roc-A-Fella Records’ debut album, “Reasonable Doubt,” was released in mid-1996. Although it was not a huge economic success, the album spawned a lot of hit songs and helped Jay-Z establish his credibility in the hip-hop industry.

He was quickly joined on the label by producers DJ Clark Kent and DJ Ski, as well as rappers Sauce Money, Memphis Bleek, and Jaz-O. In mid-1997, Roc-A-Fella Records formed a 50/50 cooperation and distribution agreement with Def Jam Recordings. The label went on to release Jay-Z’s sophomore album “In My Lifetime, Vol. 1” and R&B duo Christión’s debut album “Ghetto Cyrano.” Roc-A-Fella’s first Platinum-certified release was Jay-Z’s 1998 hit “Hard Knock Life,” from his third studio album.

While Jay-Z remained Roc-A-Fella’s prominent artist into the new millennium, the label also experienced enormous success with Beanie Sigel and DJ Clue, whose albums “The Truth” and “The Professional 2,” respectively, cracked the top five of the Billboard 200. Cam’ron’s “Come Home with Me,” Freeway’s “Philadelphia Freeway,” the Diplomats’ “Diplomatic Immunity,” Kanye West’s “The College Dropout,” and Young Gunz’s “Tough Luv” were among Roc-A-Fella’s other commercial successes.

West remained a popular artist for the label in the years that followed, with his albums “Late Registration,” “Graduation,” “808s & Heartbreak,” “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” and “Yeezus” all reaching number one on the Billboard 200, as well as his joint effort with Jay-Z, “Watch the Throne”. Meanwhile, Roc-A-Fella was entirely acquired by Def Jam Recordings in 2004. Burke departed the music industry a few years later, after selling his stakes in Roc-A-Fella.
